Alright so this book was writen in 1948 and many many many books have come out since teach card tricks. Well you see that's the thing, many books show you card tricks, but very few go into detail about sleight of hand techniques or even how to shuffle a deck of cards. I've read on forums and from speaking to various magicians, that this is the first book any serious card magician should start. Many famous magicians have even started with this book.
This book explains how to place your fingers, even for something as basic as an overhand shuffle, and then gives you practice routines plus card tricks that use that sleight of hand just taught. I'm not even done with this book and I've found that some of the sleights and shuffles taught in here have helped improve other card tricks I already perform including those that use a gimmick such as Wow 2.0 or Extractor.
Some of the wording seems a bit dated for today's standards, but the info is there. My only regret is not buying this sooner. I've been told that the Card College volumes are also a good starting point, but that Royal Road To Card Magic gets you down to business sooner. In my opinion, go through this book and then the Card College stuff to get even more detail.
